I conduct periodic reviews of e-resource use and make cost-benefit analyses to determine future renewals or cancellations. In launching new databases for the library, I am responsible for all publicity, training for staff, and integration of information about the new resource into existing Web pages and publications. I conduct periodic needs assessments of staff and the public about e-resources. I also participate in collection development for our statewide e-books collection (through Califa, California’s statewide consortium).

Getting to work early can allow me to achieve tasks; however, over time I have learned this can have side effects. Let me describe a typically hectic day. As I walk through the door I am told that two staff are sick (one of whom is the person who adjusts the roster), the phones don’t appear to be working, and as I’m listening, I also remember that I have a customer service team meeting in twenty minutes. My lunch hasn’t even made it to the fridge. I walk to the call center (where all of the external phones for the whole council are answered), as it is only five desks away, to see if they, too, are experiencing a problem.

All staff are required to work together (even if X doesn’t like Y) in a professional capacity. However, some staff do take assignments and schedule changes personally. Questions often revolve around the number of desk shifts that X has in a day compared to Y (I have yet to find a library where this does not occur), or why Y has been asked to do something that X has not. Be prepared for questions and have all the knowledge and justification ready; otherwise you will be caught on the back foot. Gathering statistics and reviewing usage of the library during hours of operation are tasks that are standard with this role.
