Because of their wrong attitude. If the attitude is wrong, the message will come through all wrong. Words paint pictures. But what picture they paint depends not only on the speaker but also on the listener. Unless we listen very carefully we can get a fragmented or jumbled or distorted picture. Like a television transmission, the picture is only as good as the receiver. In this case, the receiver is in the head of the listener. The picture is received through the ears and is projected onto the mind.

I was so fired up I could hardly hold myself back. During the warmup period I jumped higher than ever and made shots I had never made before in my life. I was ready! I could hardly wait to get onto that court and take that guy! But then I looked down the court and saw the opposing player for the first time. He looked to me like a walking tree! And the closer he got to me, the taller that tree grew! By the time we faced each other in the center of the court, he looked like a giant redwood! For a moment, I almost lost my mental image.
