In an interesting reversal of Tannenbaum’s argument about the essential moral goodness of Catholic Spain, Gross and de la Fuente suggest that because of Spain’s early history of enslaving Africans before the Trans-​Atlantic slave trade, its officials had long-​term experience equating Africanness with enslavement and had therefore developed a code of laws assuming and reinforcing their essential inferiority to Europeans.
