This publication was once digitized and reprinted from the collections of the collage of California Libraries. It used to be made from electronic pictures created during the libraries’ mass digitization efforts. The electronic photos have been wiped clean and ready for printing via computerized tactics. regardless of the cleansing technique, occasional flaws should still be current that have been a part of the unique paintings itself, or brought in the course of digitization. This booklet and thousands of others are available on-line within the HathiTrust electronic Library at

6 Standardized limiting long-standing illness ratios by employment status*, marital status and whether non-manual or manual class, women aged 20–59 + Expected frequency 10<20 * Other ‘non-employed’ (the early retired, long-term sick or disabled, and full-time students) are excluded from this table. Source: General Household Survey, 1985–86 (own analyses) those working full-time in non-manual jobs (SLLI-60), and the worst by unemployed women previously working in manual jobs, 31 per cent more than the average reporting limiting long-standing illness.

Unskilled men have a very disadvantaged health status, reporting 60 per cent more limiting long-standing illness than the national average. Women who are ‘employers and managers’ have a poorer health status than most other non-manual women and than men in the same class. This illustrates the way in which the same class has different * Women with husbands are classified by their husband's occupation, women of other marital statuses are attributed their own (current or last) occupational class. e.

The variation in health status for previously married women is particularly great; for example, women who are working full-time in non-manual occupations have a 20 per cent below average chance of poor health status, but previously married women who are unemployed or housewives and previously had a manual job are more than twice as likely to report poor health status than the average. For single women, the small numbers in some categories make it impossible for detailed analysis, but it appears that the major distinction is between the relatively good health status of nevermarried women in non-manual occupations and the poorer health of those in manual jobs.
