The second area – ‘the sociology of literature and the arts’ – will try to develop a critical language for dealing with those phenomena which have both artistic and social significance. Here the Centre will try to bring together the disciplines of literary criticism, sociology and social psychology, and social history. It will also be concerned with the nature of different audiences for different kinds of art and literature, with the relationship between different ‘kinds’ and ‘levels’ of art, and with the influences of communication upon audiences.

The Centre has developed a close link with the Department of Sociology. Some students will be registered for a Master’s degree in that department, and there might be joint supervisions where necessary. Centre students will also have access to graduate seminars in the Sociology Faculty, as well as to general advice on sociological research methods and problems. A number of non-Centre people will be invited to the Tuesday Seminars, but the numbers are certain to be restricted. They will be asked to make this Seminar a regular commitment, so that over the year continuity of interest and attendance can be maintained.
