Labé’s participation via these texts in the thriving public debate known as the Querelle des femmes paradoxically did not, for understandable reasons, enhance the public visibility of her 19 20 Louise Labé prose during most of the time since her death, inasmuch as the “other voice” adopted in her overtly polemical work (as in that of other women authors) continued to be largely overshadowed by the hegemony of traditional hierarchies. That we are now filling in that gap between knowledge and appreciation of the two (public and private) faces of Louise Labé’s work newly empowers the contemporary reader to discover, in the challenging prose writings of a brave yet compassionate social critic, the genesis of a great poet.
